Marton Community Garden

Growing Fresh Food for the Community.

Marton Community Garden

The Marton community garden aims to not only provide free organic food for the community but also provides a space for workshops teaching others how to grow their own fruit, herbs and vegetables, food preservation techniques, hosts fruit tree giveaways and information sharing events.

The community garden is also the home of our #foodisfree wagon and our community fruit and vegetable stand where people can share their excess food or take what they need

The community garden is open 24/7 for anyone to harvest the produce and everyone is welcome to join in the fun by attending one of the coffee mornings, workshops or events.

Regular Activities

A working bee is held on the first Saturday of the month from February to November. November, February and March 9am – 11am April to October 10am – 12pm. So come on down we would love to see you there! Every Friday a coffee morning is held at the community garden from 10.00 – 11.30am where you can meet others over a cuppa, share seeds, stories, and friendship.  Pick some veg from the garden and maybe even try a green smoothie?  The garden is fully fenced so everyone is welcome even the littlest members of your family.

History

In November of 2015 after a long time searching the Marton community garden found its future home. A group of enthusiastic local people then started working behind the scenes to make it all happen. Building started in January 2016 on the raised beds that would become the home of many a vegetable.

The support from people and local businesses since it’s inception has been awesome including Southern Lights Biological/Collagen Solutions, Rangitikei District Council, Edible Organics, Mcilwaine Mitre 10, Paranui Organics, Andy Galpin, Donny Hopkinson, Marton ITM, Robbie’s Small Engine Mechanics, Murray Nash and all of the volunteers who help at working bees, plant weed and help to manage the garden.
